Gayatri devi is an Incarnation of Saraswati devi, wife of lord Brahma deva, symbolizing the "shakthi"(strength) and "dev"(quality) of knowledge, purity and virtue. With the blessings of lord Brahma she is believed to have given the four veda's to mankind.
Gayatri is depicted seated on a lotus. She is depicted with five faces muktha, vidruma, hema, neela, dhawala shaded colors, had 10 hands carrying shanka, chakra, gadha, kasha, ujjwala utensil, kamala, abhaya, ankusha, varadha, rudraksha mala.
She is the god of all vedas so she named as Vedamata, Jagadhambika. Lord Brahma, Shiva, Vishnu are the weapons of her. She had Fire(Agni) in her face, Brahma in head, Vishnu in her heart, Shiva on top of the head. All Devata's and Brahmin's worship her at the early mornings and evenings.
In the real Gayatri means the prayer done in the evening times and that shakthi is called as Gayatri. People who had taken sacred upanayanam those people compulsorily chant this Gayatri mantra in the evenings(Trisandhya).
OM is the origin of all mantras, all the srusti, sthithi, laya invloves in this OM mantra. The Gayatri mantra is equal to this OM mantra, so it's most powerful and highly chanted mantra.
